Der Genelec 8040 ist ein Studiomonitor für Musikproduktion, Postproduktion und Broadcast. Er ermöglicht ermüdungsfreies Abhören und objektives Mischen mit einer klar definierten Basswiedergabe. Der Lautsprecher ist aus Aluminium-Druckguss und dadurch resonanzarm und stabil. Die Treiber werden durch Gitter geschützt.  Abgerundete Gehäusekanten und die Schallführung sorgen für eine optimale räumliche Abbildung und eine breite Hörzone. Die Bassreflexkonstruktion sorgt für präzise und tief reichende Basswiedergabe bis 41 Hz. Der Genelec 8040 bietet hohe Pegelreserven. Mit den beiden verzerrungsarmen 90-Watt-Endstufen erreicht er einen Schalldruckpegel von 105 dB. Er eignet sich somit auch für mittelgroße Räume bis ca. 30 m². Zur Anpassung an die Aufstellung gibt es schaltbare Filter. Gewindebohrungen und passendes Zubehör erleichtern die Wand- oder Deckenmontage. Der Genelec 8040 hat eine automatische Ein- und Abschaltfunktion, die bei Bedarf deaktiviert werden kann. Passende Subwoofer sind der Genelec 7360 oder 7370.
